Even at other times within the book, I felt like everything just happened so fast! Now that could be the whole point with the drug, but not prior to the drug. Written in verse, 15-year-old narrator Kristina reveals how she became addicted to crank, and how the stimulant turned. One - the mother lets Kristina visit her estranged father and two - the "action" begins with a snap of a finger. However, there were two major issues that prevented it from feeling realistic. ![]() Several times I shouted in my mind, "WHAT!?! What are you doing?", so from that perspective - I was deeply involved and thought it was a great book. Once the introduction turns into an acquaintance, it's a slippery slope for Kristina - one that is as uncontrollable as speeding down an iced-covered mountain on a round sled.This was a very scary book. She doesn't have a great relationship with her mom, who is going through some kind of midlife crisis, or her stepfather, who holds really high standards for her and really just stresses her out. The novel follows Kristina's downward spiral as she attempts to feed her addiction and deal with the consequences of the bad decisions that she has made. Kristina tells us a little about her family, and it sure doesn't sound happy. Crystal meth (aka - crank, aka - the monster) is a highly addictive drug and Kristina (aka - Bree), a 17-year-old based on Hopkins' daughter, is introduced to "the monster" as Bree. Crank by Ellen Hopkins tells the story of a teenage girl who becomes addicted to crank, a form of methamphetamine. ![]()
